Struck by anti-aircraft artillery flak over Hamburg, Germany while on a bombing mission to the oil refinery at Misburg, and went down near Wilhelmshaven, Germany.
Three crew members were killed and six bailed out and were captured.

The son of John J. and Julia (O'Donnell) Flanigan, William resided on Southern Parkway and worked as a thoroughbred horse trainer with his father. While serving with the 34th Bomb Group, William was killed in action while in flight over Germany during the Battle of the Bulge. His body was repatriated in 1949, and following funeral services at his family home, William was interred at Calvary on 20 June 1949.
